Remote control your pc using nokia 6300
Well, this is my third post. This time, we'll have something useful to those who usually give Powerpoint lectures. Before we give this a go, you'll be needing a few hardware and software.
Hardware Needed:
- a bluetooth dongle or a laptop with built-in bluetooth (in this example, I'll be using XTND Y-210 USB bluetooth dongle)
- Nokia 6300 (my remote control)
- Windows XP SP2 (for the bluetooth driver, i did not use the software that came with the dongle, it usually causes my system to hang and dump large files in my pc)
- Nokia Wireless Presenter for your PC (for 6300, you can google your own version for your mobile phone)
- Nokia Wireless Presenter for mobile phone (new phone came out of the box with this software, just check your applications to see if you have one)
- Microsoft Office (anyversion)
- Make sure to install Nokia Wireless presenter in your PC and make sure that you have Nokia Wireless Presenter in your mobile phone. If you don't have Nokia wireless presenter installed in your mobile phone, have one installed. I won't be talking about that in this blog, you can search that using google.
- Plug your bluetooth dongle and wait for the driver to fully install. You know that the installation is complete and successful when you'll have a balloon near your system tray. Aside from this, you'll also have the bluetooth icon in your system tray (the blue icon the looks like the letter "B").
- Open Bluetooth Devices in your Control Panel and click Add to have your mobile phone paired with your pc.
- For the pairing process, make sure that bluetooth option in your pc is turned on and that the unit is not hidden (unit should be set to shown to all). Follow the instructions and it would be better to opt to No Passkey for "faster" connection - no questions for passkey required that is.
- Once paired, open the Bluetooth Devices window and select the COM Ports tab. Once in the tab, look for the port number of your mobile that says Incoming from the Direction Column. Take note of the port number. NOTE: There should be only 1 incoming port, if not, go back to step previous step after removing the paired mobile phone. If all went well, you can now close the Bluetooth Devices window.
- From the start menu, select Nokia Wireless Presenter and wait for the configuration window. Once the window pops-up, you'll be given the option to select the incoming port, choose the port number in step in the previous step - the Incoming port number. Do not close this window yet.
- Get your mobile phone and navigate to your Nokia Wireless Presenter and click Connect. When prompted to turn on your bluetooth, just click Yes. If you can't find your device (laptop or desktop) click More devices. Once identified, click Select. You mobile phone should be connecting to your pc. Once connected, your phone will display Desktop. And in laptop, near the system tray, the Nokia wireless presenter icon changes from remote to remote with green transmission.
- From here, you need to configure Nokia Wireless Presenter in your pc. This can be time consuming but everything is quite straight forward. Be patient, it's quite rewarding when you get this done.
- Click the application tab and select desktop (this should also be the selection in your mobile phone). Click Edit. You'll be given a layout similar to that of your mobile phone keypad, so get on with it. Set these things to start controlling your pc. Make sure to click Save.
- By now, you should be controlling your pc. If not, well, I can't help it. You need to re-read this blog. For those who have successfully configured their pc, good for you mate. Happy controlling your pc.
TIP: For those who want to use Nokia Wireless Presenter to control PowerPoint presentations, I suggest to convert Office 2007 ppt files to 2000 or 2003 because this will enable showing of slide titles in you Nokia phone. I have tried this myself and ever since that, I never looked at my laptop when having the presentation, all I need was there at my phone.
your step-by-step is great, unfortunately I still can't use the presenter. the problem is I have a built-in bluetooth. I can follow up till step 2, but then when I go to control panel I don't have "Bluetooth Devices" blootooth devices there. I'm using Bluetooth Stack for Windows by Toshiba... any chance to modify the instructions for built-in bluetooth? Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. Presently, I don't have a laptop where I can give you instructions. As of now, try this method. Go to your Control Panel and look for Bluetooth Devices and select the Devices tab then choose Add. Turn on the bluetooth connectivity in you mobile phone and make sure that it is discoverable or shown to all and follow the on screen instructions. You should be able to successfully pair with your mobile phone. Once done, you'll have a phone icon in the Devices tab displayed. Select your device and choose the COM Ports tab. Take note of the COM Port Number with an Incoming direction, this should be used in setting your pc's nokia wireless presenter. Please post a comment if this works. Happy tweaking.
Misha, the problem you have can be solved if you uninstall Toshiba bluetooth software (Control panel, Add or remove programs) Windows Xp will take over inmediately and you will be able to setup an incoming COM port.
Now a question. how can I use this program with Powerpoint 2007? I managed to make a new configuration or mode that I called Powerpoint2, with which I can control a presentation but I can't get to see the diapositives or the notes on my phone screen like when using Powerpoint 2003.
My wireless presenter came with my Nokia 6131 but I managed to install it in a 6085, 6234 and a N73. Installed also in a N95 but it keeps trying to connect unsucessfully.
Guille, convert your powerpoint files to 97-2003 format. You will actually see the slide title when you use your nokia 6300. Let me know if this helps. Thanks for the comments.
Hi, Im kinda of new with this but i have everything installed and i can control my computer with my mobile (6110). But whenever i use a powerpoint it doesnt show up on my phone? How do i configure powerpoint to do this because it will be really cool whenever i can do that. Im am using Microsoft Office 2007 (if it makes a difference. Thanks
Anonymous... Have your powerpoint file saved in 97-2003 format (*.ppt not *.pptx) and you'll be able to see your slides in your mobile phone. To convert pptx to ppt, click the Office Icon (circle with office logo) and click Save As and choose Power Point 97-2003 Presentation. That's it.
Hi Borge. Thankyou for the reply. I have saved it as a 97-2003 file but whenever i open it on the computer it still does not show up on my computer. When i go to connect to my computer i only get the desktop option. Is that ok? Because i chose the desktop options went into were the powerpoint 97-2003 was saved opened it and pressed F5 to view the presentation but nothing shows up on my mobile still.
Has anyone had the same problem? Because i have saved my powerpoint file as an office 97-2003 file, selected desktop mode on my mobile and i still do not get the powerpoint showing on my mobile? Am i missing something still?
borge i have a problem it the phone does find the laptop but the problem is that the phone says that it cannot connect. Make sure nokia wireless presenter is on the pc already and try again. Even if everything is ok and the remote icon in the task bar is ok and does not have an X sign...but still it does not open. thanks
TO ALL: Guys, here is the thing, for me to help with your wireless presenter problem, I need a lot of information. When you ask questions, please do not forget to include in your post the OS that you are using, the bluetooth device and its driver, the model of your NOKIA phone as well as the possible software that you have installed in both your phone and your pc to use wireless presenter.. Thanks...
Hi,
Just a quick one. Have set up my bluetooth connection using a nokia 6500slide and it pairs fine - i can send files to-and-fro. But when I run wireless presenter it just won't find the phone, the incoming port is set to 9 (same as in bluetooth settings) but still no joy. Any suggestions much appreciated.
