It has been ages since I blogged about my Nokia 6300. In my posts and comments, I've always mentioned that I was able to put songs almost similar to the quality of the songs that I usually play at my pc but having only half or a third the original file size. Since then, many requested a step-by-step tutorial on how to convert mp3's to another file format that would have these attributes. The real secret with this method is with the software that I use to convert mp3's. And I convert mp3's into wma's (Windows Media Audio), is also the file format used when you rip audio CD's using Windows Media Player.

For this step by step guide, you need to install GoldWave first,  which is the application that we will be using to convert mp3's to wma's. Although it is not free, it is worth more than you'll be paying for. And also, you need to have some mp3 files that we will be converting into wma.

Step-by-Step Guide

• Once you have GoldWave installed, launch the program by clicking start - All Programs - GoldWave - GoldWave. You should see something like below.

• This time click File and select Batch Processing. Another window would appear something looking like this.

• Now, first things first. You must add mp3s to convert in your Files and folders to process dialog. Click Add Files if you want to convert say 3 to 5 mp3 files. But if you want to have an entire folder of mp3 files converted to wma, then choose Add Folder - after all, the name of this window is Batch Processing, converting 3-5 mp3 files would hardly fit the word batch.
• After adding the mp3 files, click Convert files to this format and choose wma in Save as type. For the Attributes, select WMA 9.2, 32 kbps, 44 khz, stereo CBR. Refer to the screenshot below for details.

• Click the Folder tab. This option will give you the choice to place the converted files to the directory where the original mp3 files are saved or to have all the converted files in a single directory that you have defined. Say for the settings that I have below, I have chosen to save all the wma's to a folder in my pc called TEMP in drive D:\ (See the screenshot below). This is a good option if you have mp3 files coming from different directories in your pc and want all of these converted to wma's in a single batch. Once you are done with these settings, then click Begin and wait for the conversion to finish.

 

• After the completion of the conversion process, you can now navigate to the pc directory where you saved your wma's. Using a USB cable or bluetooth, you can then copy these files to your Nokia 6300. You are done. But make sure when you start using 6300's audio player, do a refresh of the audio files first, because there is a good chance that your phone did not automatically add the new wma's in the list.

NOTE: WMA audio format is also supported by Creative mp3 players. So if you have one, you can convert your mp3's to wma and save disk space. I've even placed almost 450 songs in my 512 MB Muvo player. Just check it out, you would not notice the difference in sound quality.

Well, this is my third post. This time, we'll have something useful to those who usually give Powerpoint lectures. Before we give this a go, you'll be needing a few hardware and software.

Hardware Needed:

• a bluetooth dongle or a laptop with built-in bluetooth (in this example, I'll be using XTND Y-210 USB bluetooth dongle)
  
• Nokia 6300 (my remote control)

Software Needed:

• Windows XP SP2 (for the bluetooth driver, i did not use the software that came with the dongle, it usually causes my system to hang and dump large files in my pc)
  
• Nokia Wireless Presenter for your PC (for 6300, you can google your own version for your mobile phone)
  
• Nokia Wireless Presenter for mobile phone (new phone came out of the box with this software, just check your applications to see if you have one)
  
• Microsoft Office (anyversion)

Configuration Instructions

1. Make sure to install Nokia Wireless presenter in your PC and make sure that you have Nokia Wireless Presenter in your mobile phone. If you don't have Nokia wireless presenter installed in your mobile phone, have one installed. I won't be talking about that in this blog, you can search that using google.
   
2. Plug your bluetooth dongle and wait for the driver to fully install. You know that the installation is complete and successful when you'll have a balloon near your system tray. Aside from this, you'll also have the bluetooth icon in your system tray (the blue icon the looks like the letter "B").
   
3. Open Bluetooth Devices in your Control Panel and click Add to have your mobile phone paired with your pc.
   
4. For the pairing process, make sure that bluetooth option in your pc is turned on and that the unit is not hidden (unit should be set to shown to all). Follow the instructions and it would be better to opt to No Passkey for "faster" connection - no questions for passkey required that is.
   
5. Once paired, open the Bluetooth Devices window and select the COM Ports tab. Once in the tab, look for the port number of your mobile that says Incoming from the Direction Column. Take note of the port number. NOTE: There should be only 1 incoming port, if not, go back to step previous step after removing the paired mobile phone. If all went well, you can now close the Bluetooth Devices window.
   
6. From the start menu, select Nokia Wireless Presenter and wait for the configuration window. Once the window pops-up, you'll be given the option to select the incoming port, choose the port number in step in the previous step - the Incoming port number. Do not close this window yet.
   
7. Get your mobile phone and navigate to your Nokia Wireless Presenter and click Connect. When prompted to turn on your bluetooth, just click Yes. If you can't find your device (laptop or desktop) click More devices. Once identified, click Select. You mobile phone should be connecting to your pc. Once connected, your phone will display Desktop. And in laptop, near the system tray, the Nokia wireless presenter icon changes from remote to remote with green transmission.
   
8. From here, you need to configure Nokia Wireless Presenter in your pc. This can be time consuming but everything is quite straight forward. Be patient, it's quite rewarding when you get this done.
   
9. Click the application tab and select desktop (this should also be the selection in your mobile phone). Click Edit. You'll be given a layout similar to that of your mobile phone keypad, so get on with it. Set these things to start controlling your pc. Make sure to click Save.
   
10. By now, you should be controlling your pc. If not, well, I can't help it. You need to re-read this blog. For those who have successfully configured their pc, good for you mate. Happy controlling your pc.

You can do almost anything you want, I even made mine control everything from my phone, except for the keyboard. But having a keyboard display on, I can do virtually everything.

TIP: For those who want to use Nokia Wireless Presenter to control PowerPoint presentations, I suggest to convert Office 2007 ppt files to 2000 or 2003 because this will enable showing of slide titles in you Nokia phone. I have tried this myself and ever since that, I never looked at my laptop when having the presentation, all I need was there at my phone.
